Shenmue 3 Delayed to Second Half of 2018

Some news has surfaced on the Kickstarter page for Shenmue 3 today. Game creator Yu Suzuki has stated in a video announcement that the game has been delayed to mid 2018. The reasons stated by him as I paraphrase, are that new technologies utilized have allowed them to discover new possibilities and expressions. The game how now become bigger and more beautiful than they had ever imagined. The team needs more time to deliver the game and to achieve the game concept supported by backers and Yu Suzuki’s 16 year long personal dream.

Shenmue 3 was first revealed at E3 2015. Fans are probably disappointed, including myself given that 2 years after the initial reveal we are finding out that it will be another year, if not more until we get our hands on Shenmue 3. I think it’s a good move to reveal this now to help calm fan expectations so close to E3. As people start rolling out their predictions for E3 2017, Shenmue 3 is a game I kept seeing pop up in numerous articles, so fans are definitely eager to find out more. In the end, I think it’s fine, we’ve already waited 16 years since Shenmue’s 2 release, what harm can another year do?

Are you dissappointed in the delay? Or are you okay with Yu Suzuki taking more time to perfect the game? Let’s discuss in the comments!

  1. I don’t have any skin in this game personally, but I think the first tipoff that it’d be a while before release was the fact that the Kickstarter campaign was being advertised at Sony’s E3 conference and the developer pleaded for $10m from fans. It’s disappointing to see people disappointed, but it seemed obvious to me that it’d be a while. At least it looks like the game is actually coming out though.
